This suite carries the original name for Zion Canyon given by explorer John Wesley Powell: “Mukuntuweap.” It is believed to be a Paiute name meaning straight canyon. In 1909 President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed the area Mukuntuweap National Monument. Mormon settlers referred to this area as “Zion, a place of refuge,” and in 1919, U.S. Congress established Zion as the first National Park in Utah.
